Challenges in Otitis

The ear canal is not a smooth tube but has depressions and unevenness. Antibiotics are administered in liquid form. Due to surface tension, liquids cannot penetrate into depressions. To reach the germs located there, the remote effect of antibiotics is needed.

The problem

Now and then, the remote effect does not reach the minimum inhibitory concentration directly at the bacterium to kill it. The consequence: development of resistance.

The reactive oxygen and nitrogen species of cold plasma are ionized gas so small that they can certainly reach deeper-seated germs.

Our Solution

Cleaning & Disinfection

Note:

During the acute phase, germ reduction is indispensable, as otherwise secondary infections can arise. Outside the acute phase, no disinfecting products should be used, as they damage the skin microbiome, i.e., the natural composition of bacteria, yeasts, and fungi on the skin. The natural microbiome fulfills important tasks - especially in allergy sufferers!

Therefore, do not use RINSE prophylactically!

Step 2: Germ Reduction and Regeneration

Why is coldPlasma so useful in the ear?The ear canal is not a smooth tube. It has irregularities and depressions. If it is inflamed, the skin also shows lesions. Due to their surface tension, liquids cannot penetrate small openings.Common disinfectant solutions only work where they have direct contact with the germs, and so does our RINSE.An exception are antibiotics administered in liquid form, as they have a remote effect. However, this remote effect decreases with distance. For antibiotics to work, they need a certain concentration at the bacterium – this is called Minimum Inhibition Concentration (MIC). If the concentration at the bacterium is not high enough, the bacterium will develop mechanisms to fend off a new attack. Since bacteria renew themselves every 20-30 minutes, they can undergo several evolutionary steps within a day. Therefore, the risk of resistance development with local antibiotic administrations (such as in the ear) is high. As a fine ionized gas, coldPlasma has the advantage that it can reach even the smallest depressions or lesions. Since it destroys the membrane of bacteria immediately upon contact, resistance development is excluded according to current knowledge.

Application: Simply hold the AMAMUS Vet Virocap to the opening of the ear canal. The reactive species distribute throughout the entire ear canal. As a fine ionized gas, coldPlasma can also reach the hard-to-reach areas of the ear.

What is coldPlasma?

coldPlasma is the 4th state of matter. It is created by supplying energy to gas. We use air as the gas. The ionized gas thus created is extremely fine and consists of so-called reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (ROS/RNS) such as O3, NO, O, H2O2, H, HO2, N, Nox; HNOx.

This results in the two most important active principles:

Germ reduction:ROS/RNS destroy cell membranes, thus inactivating bacteria, fungi, and viruses – including multi-resistant pathogens like MRSA. Due to their gaseous state and small size, ROS/RNS can reach hard-to-access areas in tissue or the ear.

Regeneration:The reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (ROS/RNS) put the cells under oxidative stress, whereupon cells divide. Thus, more cells are available for regeneration.

Step 3: Intensive Care

Often underestimated is the building and strengthening of the natural skin barrier in the ear canal. In principle, the ear canal consists of completely normal skin. This skin is stressed by impurities and germs and can show lesions. Germs can cause secondary infections in these lesions. Therefore, it is important that this skin is rebuilt and strengthened. The hyaluronic acid, aloe vera and microsilver active complex in the Eardrops is designed precisely for this purpose. Hyaluronic acid lays protectively on the skin and helps it to strengthen. Aloe vera soothes stressed skin and microsilver supports the regeneration of the natural skin microbiome.

Step 1 ‒ Cleansing with RINSE

Thoroughly clean the ear canal with RINSE.

In case of severe contamination, we recommend a thorough cleaning of the ear canal once under general anesthesia. While Rinse can certainly break up a biofilm, manual removal may be necessary for heavy contamination.

If the ear canal is severely swollen, it is advisable to prepare beforehand with decongestant preparations.

Anyone who has ever had an ear infection knows how painful it can be. That's why our users like to combine this treatment with painkillers.

Please use disinfectants only in the active phases - not prophylactically, otherwise the natural skin microbiome will be damaged.

Since you treat twice a week in the practice anyway, it is not necessary to give the animal owner RINSE. Rinsing twice a week is completely sufficient. Daily rinsing is rather counterproductive.

Step 2 ‒ Application of coldPlasma

After thoroughly cleaning the ear canal, hold the coldPlasma directly in front of the opening of the ear canal for at least 3 minutes.

A new spacer must be used with each application of coldPlasma to ensure a safe and hygienic treatment.

After each use of the device, thoroughly disinfect the handpiece attachment to prevent the spread of germs.

A spacer is intended for single use and should be replaced with a new, sterile spacer after use.

Step 3 ‒ Application of the Eardrops

After coldPlasma treatment, apply 5-10 drops (depending on the patient's size) of EARDROPS into the ear.

Please give the EARDROPS to the patient owners so they can administer 5–10 drops into the ear daily.

For patients who are regularly prone to ear infections, it is advisable to regularly (twice a week) care for the skin in the ear canal with EARDROPS.

Regular use helps strengthen the natural skin barrier in the ear and makes the skin more resistant.
